RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - Derby - D212 - Scam Visa & mastercard scam - Visa & Fraud

This one is pretty slick since they provide YOU with all the information, except the one piece they want. Note, the callers do not ask for your card number; they already have it. This information is worth reading. By understanding how the VISA & MasterCard Telephone Credit Card Scam works, you'll be better prepared to protect yourself.. Calls were received on Wednesday from "VISA", and Thursday from "MasterCard".

The scam works like this: Person calling says, "This is (name), and I'm calling from the Security and Fraud Department at VISA. My badge number is 12460. Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I'm calling to verify. This would be on your VISA card which was issued by (name of bank) did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for £497.99 from a Marketing company based in London ?" When you say "No", the caller continues with, "Then we will be issuing a credit to your account. This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from £297 to £497, just under the £500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives you your address), is that correct?" You say "yes". The caller continues - "I will be starting a fraud investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 0800 number listed on the back of your card (0800-VISA) and ask for Security. You will need to refer to this Control Number. The caller then gives you a 6 digit number. "Do you need me to read it again?"

Here's the IMPORTANT part on how the scam works the caller then says, "I need to verify you are in possession of your card." He'll ask you to "turn your card over and look for some numbers." There are 7 numbers; the first 4 are part of your card number, the next 3 are the security numbers that verify you are the possessor of the card. These are the numbers you sometimes use to make Internet purchases to prove you have the card. The caller will ask you to read the 3 numbers to him. After you tell the caller the 3 numbers, he'll say, "That is correct, I just needed to verify that the card has not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card. Do you have any other questions?" After you say, "No," the caller then thanks you and states, "Don't hesitate to call back if you do", and hangs up. You actually say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the Card number .

But after we were called on Wednesday, we called back within 20 minutes to ask a question. Are we glad we did! The REAL VISA Security Department told us it was a scam and in the last 15 minutes a new purchase of £497.99 was
charged to our card. Long story - short - we made a real fraud report and closed the VISA account. VISA is reissuing us a new number.

What the scammers want is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of the card. Don't give it to them . Instead, tell them you'll call VISA or MasterCard directly for verification of their conversation. The real VISA told us that they will never ask for anything on the card as they already know the information since they issued the card!

If you give the scammers your 3 Digit PIN Number, you think you're receiving a credit. However, by the time you get your statement you'll see charges for purchases you didn't make, and by then it's almost too late and/or more difficult to actually file a fraud report.

The police said they are taking several of these reports daily! They also urged us to tell everybody we know that this scam is happening .

If you require any further information please contact Visa on 0870 907 0010 or the Police on 0345 123 3333.

RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - Alfreton - A3382 vehicle crime

This is a reminder to all residents and businesses to not leave any items in your vehicles on display. If you have coats, bags or boxes put them out of sight in the boot and remove them completely at night, especially work tools. It only takes a hint of something valuable inside to gain the attention of an opportunist thief. This is also true of sat navs and other
electronic items, put them in the glove box and remove any evidence like the cradle or ring on your window.

Recently there has been a rise in instances in Long Eaton and the Heanor/Langley Mill area but this crime can occur anywhere.

Before you get out your vehicle just have a look around to see if anything could be of interest left on display.

RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - Alfreton - A3377 Crimestoppers

Crimestoppers launch Most Wanted Distraction Burglary campaign

Crime-fighting charity, Crimestoppers, is today launching a list of 10 Most Wanted people sought in connection with distraction burglaries and warning people to be careful about who they let into their homes, as the traditional peak time for this crime approaches (February/March). Distraction burglary is a crime which particularly effects elderly people,
the average age of a victim is 81-years-old.

Distraction burglary is any crime where a falsehood, trick or distraction is used on a house to gain, or try to gain, access to the premises to commit burglary. Violence is increasingly being used by offenders against the elderly in order to gain entry to their homes and steal their property.

Crimestoppers has been working with Operation Liberal, the unit which provides a national intelligence overview of distraction burglary crime, which has produced the list of 10 Most Wanted individuals. Pictures and E-fits of theses individuals can be viewed on the Crimestoppers website

There have been many recent examples of vigilant members of the public reporting suspicious behaviour to the police which has led to a number of distraction burglars being arrested. We want this to continue. Should anyone have information about someone they believe is carrying out these terrible crimes please call police or if you prefer, phone Crimestoppers, who will treat your call anonymously.

[RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - Alfreton - A3376 Have Your Say results

The Derbyshire Constabulary and Derbyshire Police Authority 'Have Your Say' consultation exercise saw 2,623 people at 17 venues across the county.

People were asked how much they knew about their Neighbourhood policing teams, what they thought about crime levels, the Policing Pledge, anti-social behaviour, their confidence levels in the police and criminal justice system.

Key responses were:

* Of the 2,623 people surveyed 2,057 (88 per cent) were 'very confident' or 'fairly confident' in Derbyshire police.

* 1,526 (58 per cent) said they were aware that they had a dedicated Safer Neighbourhood team for their area.

* Thirty eight per cent of people thought that crime was reducing 'a lot or a little' in Derbyshire and 34 per cent believed it was about the same as last year.

It is important that we are aware of the views of our communities so we can tailor policing to meet their needs.

Although we have achieved excellent results in the areas of reducing and detecting crime, we need to do more to reduce the fear of crime. The number of recorded crimes has been falling for the last six years but people don't seem to know that.

RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - Alfreton - A3349 computer scam

This is just a notice regards a reported incident on the 6th January 2010.

A person was called in Long Eaton by a man who claimed to be working with Microsoft Windows and that a virus had been identified on the householder's computer. He was redirected to another company and they requested that the informant download some software to give remote access to the computer. A request was made for a fee of £30 and at this point he became suspicious and ended the call.

This appears quite clearly to be an attempt to access the computer to steal personal information or passwords.

RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - Alfreton - A3330 Restorative Justice

The Restorative Justice project launched in April has now resolved more than 3,200 crimes. This means that local crimes are dealt with in a way that achieves a positive outcome in accordance with the victims' wishes without the case going through the court process. The crime is recorded as usual but dealt with in a more proportionate way.

Some form of remorse, apology, reparation or compensation by the offender is required for restorative justice to take place. This could include being given words of advice, giving an apology, completing reparation work or compensating the victim.

Crimes which can be dealt with in this way include criminal damage, minor assaults and minor theft.

RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - Alfreton - A3338 Frozen water

We recommend the following advice and ask that you inform others, especially those with children.

Around Derbyshire at this time there are several locations where there is frozen water, please do not walk or allow your children to play in these areas. No matter how thick the ice looks, ICE IS NEVER SAFE. It can easily break and the water underneath is very cold and could be deep.

Even at other times water is never safe, please help others to understand the dangers of water.

RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - Alfreton - A3281 unattended vehicles]

This is a reminder to not leave your vehicles open and unattended if defrosting them on chilly mornings.

In frosty conditions, the temptation can be to leave the car on the drive or on the street with the engine running to defrost the windscreen. This is an ideal chance for an opportunist thief to steal the vehicle or property. The majority of insurers are unlikely to cover claims for theft or damage to your vehicle in these circumstances.

It is also an offence to leave a car unattended on the road with the engine running.

RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - Alfreton - A3266 christmas shopping

This is a reminder regards Christmas shopping when using your vehicle.

If you have to store Christmas gifts in the car please make sure you store them out of sight in the boot with other items like bags, coats and anything that a thief may be tempted by. Even though you know that an innocent item like carrier bag may be empty, a theft will not.

Also try not to return to your car to leave gifts in the boot before continuing your shopping, thieves may well watch car parks for this activity. If possible arrange to collect heavy or bulky items that can't be hidden when you have finished all your shopping.

At the first opportunity remove all items from the car and store them safely.

Possible Attempt Fraud
Importance: High

Info from Officer on Duty -

On Thursday 19th November I visited one of my local residents. Whilst at the address they received a phone call from someone claiming to be from Barclays Bank. I heard one side of the conversation and became worried about what I
was hearing. The person on the phone was claiming that due to bank errors over a number of years, approx £3.61 per month had been taken from their account per month, and my resident was owed about £2500 back. Due to what I
was hearing in the conversation I was concerned and at the point where my resident began to tell them their debit card number and expiry details to their card I intervened. Having worked in the industry before I knew this
wasn't correct as the bank would have all the relevant account information and there is no need for them to ask for card number, expiry details and verfication number on the back.

I spoke to the person on the phone who sounded of Indian/Asian origin and they stated they were Barclays. I asked for their address which they refused, their head office which they refused but stated " was in London",
name which they refused and contact number they refused. I know that when asked they should provide their details etc etc. They were quite aggressive on the phone and it appears their tactics are to be quite demanding, pushy
and use the hook (which worked) of we owe you money. The resident tried to confirm with them they were legitimate by asking them to state his address and name which they could do. After further questioning by the resident to
the person reporting to be from Barclays, the "Barclays" representative terminated the call.

I advised the resident to call Barclays immediately which they did. Barclays confirmed that they had made no such call and no such situation with regards to them owing money had occurred. Barclays happily provided their details
etc. The residents card was cancelled immediately and their fraud dept has been contacted. The resident then contacted their local branch who apparently said it was the second call they had been made aware of locally that day.

RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - Alfreton - A3241 distraction burglaries

Police are appealing for information after distraction burglars posed as bogus officials to steal money from pensioners.

The first incident happened at 1pm yesterday (Wednesday, December 2) when a man knocked at the door of a house in Stanton Road, Sandiacre and told the 76-year-old resident that he was from the water board.

He kept the victim talking in the kitchen before leaving the house. It was later discovered that cash was missing.

The man is described as white, about 5ft 4ins tall, slim with short, dark hair. He wore a navy blue jumper.

A second distraction incident took place at 1.30pm at a house in Hill Close, Stanley Common, when a man told the 85-year-old resident that he needed to check the her water supply.

The victim became suspicious and asked him to leave. Nothing was taken but the victim was left shaken and was treated by paramedics for shock. The offender was in his 40s and wore a dark jumper.

The third distraction burglary happened about 1.50pm, when an 85-year-old man was visited at his home in Canal Street, Ilkeston, by a man who said he needed to check the taps. After he left, the victim realised that cash had been stolen from the house.

The offender is described as white, about 5ft 8ins tall and in his mid-20s. He wore a black jumper and blue jeans.

An 82-year-old woman was targeted at 4.50pm when a man visited her house in The Croft, South Normanton, claiming to be a builder. He kept her talking in the kitchen before a second man, also posing as a builder, went upstairs to distract to the victim's husband.

When the two men left, the couple realised that money was missing.

Both men were white and aged in their 30s. The couple described the first man as being of medium build with short, dark hair. He wore a dark top and jeans. He was about 5ft 6ins tall.

The second man was slim, had light brown hair and was slightly taller than the first man. He wore a light coloured jacket.

Police are investigating whether these crimes are linked. Officers believe that in each case, another offender entered the houses to steal cash while the victims were distracted.

Superintendent Kul Mahay said: "Distraction burglars prey upon elderly and vulnerable people who are trusting of strangers.

"We would appeal that anyone with information about these incidents contact police to help us catch these criminals.

"We would urge people not to let strangers into their homes. If you are not expecting a visitor, don't let them in. Call the police or a friend or family member so someone is with you and can check the visitor's identity.

"Genuine callers will be happy to wait outside while you verify their identity."

RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - Alfreton - A3242 ICE in case of emergency

This is a reminder about the 'In Case of Emergency' (ICE) Mobile Phone Campaign where people are encouraged to enter an emergency contact telephone number in their mobile phone's memory under the heading 'ICE'

This could save crucial time if you become ill or are in an accident and cannot communicate critical information to the emergency services. It would enable emergency service personnel and hospital staff to be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialling the number you have stored as 'ICE'.

Follow these hints to get the best out of ICE:
Make sure the person whose name and number you are giving has agreed to be your ICE partner.

Make sure your ICE contact is aware of the people you would like contacted on your behalf - including your place of work.

Make sure your ICE person's number is one that's easy to contact, for example a home number could be useless in an emergency if the person works full time.

Make sure your ICE partner is aware of any medical conditions that could affect your emergency treatment - for example allergies or current medication.

Make sure if you are under 18, your ICE partner is a parent or guardian authorised to make decision on your behalf - for example if you need a life or death operation.

Should your preferred contact be deaf, then type ICETEXT then the name of your contact before saving the number.

For more than one contact use ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc.

Type a * after the telephone number under your ICE contact. This will avoid a duplicate entry of another contact in your phone book.

It only takes a few seconds to do, and it could easily help save your life. Why not put ICE in your phone now and spread the word to your family and friends?

RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - Alfreton - A3244 Rape awareness campaign

Derbyshire Constabulary has joined up with forces around the country as part of a national rape awareness campaign.

The campaign aims to reduce incidents of rape and sexual assault in the run up to Christmas. In Derbyshire statistics show that a third of victims of rape or sexual assault thought their attacker was under the influence of alcohol and a quarter of victims felt under the influence of alcohol themselves.

Incidents of rape and sexual assault have the potential to rise in the weeks running up to Christmas with the highest proportion of victims and offenders falling into the 16 to 25 year-old age bracket.

Many of the cases we deal with can often involve alcohol and we know that the more alcohol someone drinks, the lower their inhibitions are and the more vulnerable they become.

General Advice

*Make sure that any taxi you use is registered and either one that you have ordered or one that you will be able to identify at a later date if necessary

*Do not take short cuts and stick to lit areas.

*Before leaving a venue ring whoever is expecting you at home to tell them you are on your way.

*Do not lose sight of your drink, preferably hold it at all times. This includes venues such as house parties as well as in clubs and bars.

*Go out in groups and stay together. If you're not getting a taxi home make sure you're with someone.

*Keys. Make sure you have your keys ready when you reach your front door or car parked in a car park. Get someone to walk with you to your car.

*Consider taking out a panic alarm, these are very inexpensive and a very effective deterrent.

*Think about what you are doing at all times and keep yourself safe.

If you have suffered rape or sexual assault and wish to speak to someone about what happened, you can contact Derbyshire police on 0345 123 33 33 or Derbyshire Rape Crisis on 01332 372545.

RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - Alfreton - A3191 bogus caller

On Thursday 19th Nov 2009 an officer of the Codnor and Waingroves Safer Neighbourhood Team was visiting a resident and KIN member when they received a call from Barclays Bank. The caller stated that an error had occurred and the bank owed them thousands of pounds. It soon became clear that the caller was bogus when they asked for card details.

When the officer intervened and started to ask questions the caller hung up. Barclays was contacted and they knew nothing about the call and confirmed they would never ask for person details or card information.

These calls do happen and no matter how convincing they are never give out personal details to unknown callers who call you.

RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - Alfreton - A3190 tyre tread depth

Derbyshire Constabulary is appealing to motorists to check their tyres as a matter of urgency because further heavy rain is forecast for the coming week.

Last weekend five people died on the county's roads and there have been several serious road collisions in which a contributing factor may have been surface water on the roads.

Tyres don't have to be bald to perform badly in wet weather. When a vehicle travels through standing water resulting from heavy rain, the tyres need as much tread as possible in order to clear a path through the water and maintain their grip to avoid the situation known as aquaplaning.

Police have also issued a specific warning to motorists to avoid having rear tyres which are significantly more worn than those on the front of the vehicle.

Good front tyres cut through standing water on a corner or when the vehicle is changing lanes and maintain their grip but worn back tyres can't do the same. This means that there is a chance that the vehicle will spin out of control.

It is important to realise that tyre depths do not have to have reduced to an illegal extent for rear wheel aquaplaning to develop.

Hitting a pool of standing water at speed, especially in the dark is bad enough, but trying to regain control of a car when the back end has unexpectedly 'stepped-out' is a huge challenge for any driver.

The message is simple. Regardless of whether a car is rear-wheel or front-wheel drive, if you buy less than a full set of new tyres always make sure that the new tyres go on the back.

The legal minimum depth for car tyres is 1.6mm. All tyres have small "wear bar" indicators set inside the grooves of the tread pattern set at 1.6mm. Aquaplaning is defined as when a wedge of water develops between the tyre
and the road surface causing the tyre to lose its grip. The likelihood of aquaplaning developing is related to the speed of the vehicle, the depth of the water, and the ability of the tyre's tread to disperse the water.
Any combination of increased speed, increased depth of water, or reduced tread depth increases the likelihood of aquaplaning.

RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - Alfreton - A3055 vehicles left running unattended

This is a seasonal reminder about leaving your car running unattended. As the temperature starts to drop there are incidents where people will leave their car running to defrost the windows. As you can appreciate this is a perfect opportunity for a thief to take the vehicle.

The majority of insurers are also unlikely to cover claims for theft or damage to your vehicle in these circumstances.

If the car is on the road it is also an offence to leave it unattended with the engine running.

Also don't leave your car with the engine on whilst popping into the local convenience store or visiting an ATM. In Erewash and Amber Valley last winter between November and February four vehicles were taken in this manner.

RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - Alfreton - A3049 Operation Relentless update

The following is information from the Operation Relentless team

After an excellent start to the campaign, this momentum has been carried forwards with fantastic results being seen all across the county. Here's a glimpse of just some of the events that have taken place over the past
week:
. In South Derbyshire, Community Payback teams cleaned up the full-time travellers' site at Foston and removed street graffiti in Swadlincote and Newhall.
. A high-profile 'Operation Bethnal' media event was held in Derby to raise awareness about bag dipping and theft in the city. 200 people received free personal attack alarms, Crimestoppers reporting information and copies of our new 'No Trick or Treat' posters. The
event was also covered by Central TV, who included interviews with members of the local Anti Social Behaviour and Safer Neighbourhood Teams.
. Erewash launched their 'Wildlife Workshops' at Hallam Fields School, where more than 200 students learned about how to respect the environment, animals and each other. Further events are arranged for schools in Ilkeston and Long Eaton.
. A fresher's crime awareness event took place at Chesterfield College over two days; more than 1,000 students were given advice on safe drinking and personal safety.
. Bolsover Community Safety Partnership held an Anti Social Behaviour Challenge Day with workshops for the public, particularly tenants from the Bolsover District. Visitors were given information on the work of the local Community Safety Partnership and Anti Social Behaviour teams, including current priorities and initiatives. They also had the opportunity to voice concerns, perceptions of crime and Anti Social Behaviour levels, and how they thought partners could increase confidence in the service we provide.
. The Cracking Crime Day at Shirebrook was a great success, with more than 500 people attending the event where visitors received community safety advice, crime prevention information and themed giveaways.
. A mobile cinema, funded by Derby Dales Community Safety Partnership, visited the local youth club at Darley Dale and was used by nearly 60 young people. Whilst it was running, no Anti Social Behaviour  at all was reported. Further mobile cinema dates are planned during and after Relentless.
. Amber Valley have organised and funded a wide range of diversionary activities for young people, including street dance projects in Ripley, Langley Mill, Heanor, Somercotes and Ironville.
. An Anti Social Behaviour reduction poster competition was held at Brackensdale school in Mackworth. Winning designs will be used on computer mouse mats and posters throughout Derby schools and in Anti Social Behaviour hot spot areas on the local estate.
. Trading Standards have released a DVD package for schools entitled 'Consequences', which discusses risks linked to under-age drinking and carrying knives.
